HTC Desire HD hard reset process is as under 

First of all, with the phone switched off, just press and hold the volume down key & power key slightly for a second, Then 4 options will come in which you have to select only one option that is factory reset, and select that option by volume keys and to confirm, press power button, it will format within few seconds the user data and make it default settings and phone then get reboot with fresh phone.

Soft reset can also be done on the phone if handset menu functions are ok
If phone is running slower than normal processing, or any application is not functioning properly, or your phone becomes unresponsive or hang,  then go to settings and restore from there, handset will restart may be your problem get solve.
